Benalla racetrack will be redeveloped in a $3 million project co-funded by the state government, Racing Victoria and the Benalla Racing Club.

The project, which began this week after last Friday’s Cup meeting, will replace the surface of the track with sandy loam and better drainage, while a reinstated chute to allow varied starting points and race distances.

The track’s width will be increased from 16 metres to 19 metres, with works due to be completed by March 2026.

There are 15 trainers and 300 horses based at the track, which hosts 11 race meetings and six trial or jump-out meetings annually.

“This track redevelopment will help position Benalla as an exciting regional hub for racing and training – rain, hail or shine,” Minister for Racing Anthony Carbines said.

“We’ll always back the racing industry and the tens of thousands of jobs it supports in regional Victoria.”

The state government will contribute $1.55 million, with RV and the club to match the investment.
