Group 1-winning dam of Saxon Warrior, Maybe, dies age 17

Maybe, the former European champion two-year-old filly and dam of 2,000 Guineas winner Saxon Warrior, has died aged 17 following a sudden illness, Coolmore has announced.

“She was the loveliest, sweetest mare and will be greatly missed by all of those who took such great care of her during her time here,” said Coolmore Manager James Mockridge.

Purchased for €340,000 at the Arqana August Sale, Maybe was unbeaten as a juvenile for Aidan O’Brien, culminating in victory in the G1 Moyglare Stud Stakes. At three, she finished third in the 1,000 Guineas behind stablemate Homecoming Queen.

Maybe was among the first mares Coolmore sent to Japanese sire Deep Impact in 2013, producing black-type performer Pavlenko and subsequently Saxon Warrior, now a stallion at Coolmore, who also spent four seasons shuttling to Australia, with his best horse G2 Sandown Guineas winner Sheza Alibi.

Maybe has two-year-old and yearling colts by Dubawi.
