Dan Fogarty appointed full-time race caller for Southland, Otago in NZ

Dan Fogarty has been named the full-time racing commentator for thoroughbred, harness, and greyhound meetings across Southland and Otago districts in New Zealand’s South Island.

The 23-year-old has already called major events, including the Southland Guineas at Ascot Park and a Gore Harness Racing Club meeting, as he steps into the new role.

Fogarty takes over from Australian Craig Rail, who will now provide commentary and studio support on an as-needed basis.

“His ability to switch effortlessly between codes, his professional calls, and his ability to find a winner for punters means now is the right time for him to step into a full-time position,” said Kyle Bettler, head of live racing for Entain Australia and New Zealand.

Fogarty plans to relocate permanently to Invercargill later this year.

The appointment comes through the Trackside commentator internship programme, which has previously helped other race callers secure industry positions, and will see Fogarty’s voice become familiar across broadcasts for multiple racing codes in the region.
