Basil Nolan enters Queensland Racing Hall of Fame

Queensland racing icon Basil Nolan has been inducted into the Queensland Racing Hall of Fame in recognition of a lifetime of service to the thoroughbred industry.

The 80‑year‑old breeder and administrator accepted the honour with humility, saying: “It’s unbelievable – I truly never expected to be in the Queensland Racing Hall of Fame.”

Nolan’s deep roots in the sport began at his family’s Raheen Stud on the Darling Downs, where he joined the operation in 1963 and, with his wife Diane, helped build it into one of the state’s most respected breeding establishments.

“It is not just an honour for me, it’s for the thoroughbred breeders in Queensland and the people that make it up, alongside my wife who is my backbone,” Nolan said.

His contribution to the wider industry extends far beyond Raheen Stud, including decades of leadership with the Thoroughbred Breeders Queensland Association, where he served as president in two separate stints.

Nolan also played a key role on the Queensland Off‑The‑Track Board, advocating for horse welfare and rehoming programs, and represented the state at a national level as president of Thoroughbred Breeders Australia.

“He’s a fighter … right to the core of an issue, and that’s what makes for good, strong leadership,” Racing Queensland director Graham Quirk said of Nolan’s impact over more than 25 years of service.

Racing Minister Tim Mander described Nolan as “one of the most revered figures in Queensland racing”, praising his enduring contribution not only to the state’s breeding ranks but to the sport nationwide.
