Dettori hospitalised after Newmarket car accident

Retired international jockey Frankie Dettori remains in hospital after suffering several broken ribs and a broken thumb in a car accident near Newmarket on Wednesday evening.

Dettori, 55, was driving when another vehicle struck the rear passenger side of his car, causing it to spin and overturn, according to a statement released by his management company.

The Italian great was taken to hospital, where he continues to undergo scans and observation, with his injuries still being assessed by medical staff.

In a message posted to social media, Dettori thanked emergency services and hospital staff for their care, saying he was “very sore” and would take time to rest and recover.

Dettori retired from race riding earlier this year after a decorated career that included more than 3300 winners, three British jockeys’ premierships and victories in many of the world’s biggest races.

The accident casts doubt on his planned return to Britain for the Leger Legends charity race at Doncaster in September, with no timeframe yet given for his recovery.
