Donaldson called extensively in New South Wales and then as number one thoroughbred caller in Adelaide, including Black Caviar’s famous Group 1 double at Morphettville in 2012.

He left race commentary in 2014 after a parting of the ways with Sky Channel. He had endured much-publicised mental health challenges.

Fellow caller Terry McAulliffe confirmed on Sunday that Donaldson’s son Ethan had informed him that his father had died.

“At the height of your powers Hilti what a wonderful broadcaster you were of all 3 codes. Your Christian Cullen Miracle Mile call my fave. Rest easy my friend,” McAuliffe tweeted.

Fellow racecaller and friend Darren Flindell also paid tribute.

“A flamboyant race caller in his time who was a loyal and trusted friend for 3 decades. I’m deeply saddened my phone with his name will no longer ring but take solace in the fact his pain is over,” he said on X.

Donaldson is survived by his two sons, Ethan and Zane.
