Anxious wait for Accidental Bid camp in SA Derby countdown
Import Accidental Bid, the best-supported horse to win the South Australian Derby, has been left sweating on a start in the $1 million race after being named first emergency.
Accidental Bid, unbeaten in two Australian starts in restricted company at Pakenham, had been backed into $2.80 before final acceptances on Tuesday morning, but trainer Ciaron Maher and his Australian Bloodstock connections must now rely on a scratching to gain a start.
Should he secure a run at Morphettville on Saturday, Accidental Bid has been well treated by the barrier draw and will jump from gate two with John Allen booked to ride.
In a surprise development, VRC Oaks winner Strictly Business was confirmed for the Derby despite three moderate autumn runs and will start from the inside barrier.
Last-start Group 1 placegetter After Summer faces a tougher assignment after drawing barrier 18 in the 16-horse field.
Leading jockey Jamie Melham will also face a wide draw aboard the Mick Kent-trained Arabian Prince after the gelding came up with barrier 19.
