Predicted extreme heat could force Racing Victoria to change the starting time of the prestigious Newmarket Handicap meeting at Flemington.
A Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) forecast for a maximum 39C on Saturday has RV and the Victoria Racing Club ready to bring the day’s racing forward to start in a late morning timeslot.
The expected high temperature has already impacted one of the autumn’s glamour days with two support races dropped from the original 10-event card.
It will leave eight races to be run during what is likely to be a condensed meeting in keeping with RV’s heat policy.
