Demand for premium broodmares in Australia exploded off the back of the pandemic with overall investment in mares and race fillies surging some 145 per cent in 2020/21 alone.
While the spending spree, a lot of it powered by new investment in the Australian market from the likes of Yulong, has moderated over the past year, Australia’s premier mare sales, the Inglis Chairman’s Sale and Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, grossed over $150 million between them last year.
To give that some context, the gross of those two companies’ biggest yearling sales, at Gold Coast in January and Easter in April in 2023, was $383 million.
