Floods set to peak at Rockhampton racecourse

The Rockhampton Jockey Club is awaiting the impact of rising floods on its Callaghan Park racecourse, with the track closed and all horses, vital infrastructure and equipment moved off site.

RJC chief executive David Aldred provided an update on social media on Tuesday, saying the Fitzroy River was still rising and parts of the track had already been submerged.

“All horses have been relocated from on-track stabling to safe accommodation, and vital infrastructure and equipment have been removed from the grounds until the flood event is over,” he said.

“The adjacent Fitzroy River flood height is expected to peak at a moderate level somewhere between 7 and 7.5 metres by tomorrow (Wednesday) morning. The back training track has been flooded, and currently, the murky river water has crept up to the turnstile course entry gates and towards the day stalls.”

The track has previously been impacted badly by floods from the nearby river.
