Experienced industry professional Sam Fursdon has been appointed as New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing’s general manager of welfare and industry capability.
A month after announcing sweeping changes to New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing’s executive structure, chief executive Matt Ballesty announced the key recruitment of Fursdon.
“Sam has a proven track record of getting things done and a genuine passion for the industry," Ballesty said.
“She understands the challenges we face regarding our industry’s social licence, but also the opportunities, and she’s the right person to help us build on our welfare standards and support the people who make our sport thrive.”
Fursdon said taking on such a critical role at NZTR was a privilege.
“Horses have been at the centre of my life for as long as I can remember, and I’m passionate about ensuring they receive the very best care,” said Fursdon, who starts her position on October 1.
“Equally, I want to support the people who dedicate their lives to racing, because when our horses and our people thrive, so too does our entire industry.”
Fursdon’s appointment comes after Justine Sclater, the outgoing head of welfare and sustainability, resigned from NZTR.
Under Ballesty’s executive overhaul, NZTR appointed Dan Smith as its general manager of strategy and transformation. A recruitment process continues to fill the newly created positions of general manager of racing and general manager of brand experience, communications and industry promotion.
