Dan Meagher likens the decline of his legendary father John through dementia to “a massive dark cloud” but as the champion Singaporean trainer embarks on his new journey back in Australia, his dad’s lessons ring true every day in the stable.

When Dan Meagher watches – nervously – as Lim’s Kosciuszko canters to the gates at Flemington on Saturday, he will glance across the track to the city side with nostalgia and sadness.

From 1991 until 1999, Meagher’s father John trained a string of Group 1 winners from the already-famous Chicquita Lodge stables parallel to Smithfield Road. Dan and his older brothers Chris and Paul grew up in those stables.
