Jet defies Waller army to break maiden

One-time $1 million yearling Jet defied seven Chris Waller-trained opponents to break his maiden over 1400 metres at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained Zoustar gelding was having his fourth start and hustled up by Tim Clark assumed the early lead in the colours of James Harron Bloodstock.

He was not to be headed from that point but did have to see off a challenge from Snitzel Miss, who ran him to a narrow margin on the line. Garrix, also trained by Waller, finished third.

“He’s always shown us so much potential and ability at home and unfortunately his race record today doesn’t reflect that, but I think today was a good indication of the ability as he got the right conditions,” Bott said.

“A nice firm track is what he’s needed and he didn’t get it in that first preparation and just getting out slightly in trip today was a big positive as well.

“Hopefully he will take confidence off that, because it was a tough win, he was there to be beaten and I thought he might have been at the furlong there, but he really dug deep and kept finding, and that’s always a very encouraging sign.”

Waller would end up training three of the six winners on the program.
