Jockey CK Khaw succumbs to injuries suffered in race fall
The Malaysian racing industry is mourning the death of popular jockey CK Khaw who died early on Monday morning, a week after suffering a severe fall at Selangor Turf Club.
Khaw, who rode 218 winners during his career, was 32.
The jockey was thrown from three-year-old Team Work, who laid out and then laid in abruptly in the straight when having his first start on August 9.
Khaw was taken to hospital immediately and he had been in a coma since the terrible fall. He had ridden a winner early on the card for expatriate English trainer Richard Lines.
“With profound sadness, the Selangor Turf Club mourns the passing of CK Khaw. Malaysian racing has lost a passionate soul. Though he has left us far too soon, his spirit and love for racing will forever remain in our hearts,” Selangor Turf Club chairman Tan Sri Datuk Sir Richard Cham Hak Lim said.
Team Work broke through the running rail in the incident but got back to his feet and galloped riderless.
Stewards ordered that Team Work must satisfactorily complete in at least three 1000m barrier trials and undergo veterinary tests prior to racing again.
