Kate Deane, Australia's first female racing club president, has died aged 100.
Deane broke new ground when she led Western Queensland's Longreach Jockey Club in 1986, and the club recently hosted a function celebrating her 100th birthday.
She was still a regular at the Longreach track and was guided to the races by hard-working volunteer Helen Morton.
“She was more than a legend – she was a beautiful, beautiful person with it,” long-time Central West horseman Garry Browne told Racing Queensland.
“Her leadership and service transformed not only our club but also the place of women in Australian racing. From the committee table to the trackside rail, her presence inspired all who knew her,” the club said in a Facebook post.
“Kate’s legacy is woven into every race we run and every barrier we break. Her impact will continue to echo across outback racing for years to come.”
“Rest easy, Mrs Deane. Your race has been run, and it was nothing short of remarkable.”
