More tests for Ceolwulf after Apollo Stakes

Racing NSW has confirmed that Group 1 winner Ceolwulf will undergo further diagnostic testing after blood was detected following his run in the Apollo Stakes on Saturday.

Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Carly Garling advised stewards that, following discussions with trainer Joe Pride’s stable veterinarian and a specialist equine surgeon, the gelding will be transferred to a specialist equine hospital for comprehensive assessment.

Stewards will review the results with Dr Garling before determining whether Australian Rule 79, relating to horses that bleed, should be invoked. Under AR79, any appearance of blood from both nostrils is deemed a bleeding attack unless caused by external trauma, triggering mandatory stand‑downs.

If Ceolwulf is found to have bled, the rule requires a two‑month ban from training and a three‑month ban from racing, with the horse permitted to resume only after completing a satisfactory gallop, trial or jump‑out in the presence of stewards.
