Murphy named as Te Akau’s new NZ racing manager
Te Akau Racing has appointed Tom Murphy as its new Racing Manager, marking the latest step in the Irish-born horseman’s impressive international career and continued rise within the leading New Zealand racing stable.
Murphy, who most recently served as Foreman of Te Akau’s Colt Barn, has played a key role in overseeing daily operations, staff management, and the development of young horses while working closely with trainers, veterinarians and industry professionals.
Originally from County Kildare, Ireland, Murphy began working in the thoroughbred industry at 17 and has since gained extensive experience across racing, breeding, bloodstock sales and horse development in Ireland, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.
His resume includes roles with Darley Japan Pre-Training Centre, Tom Clover Racing and John O’Donoghue Racing, as well as Yearling Manager positions at Tinnakill House Stud and Sledmere Stud. He has also worked extensively at thoroughbred sales throughout Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
Te Akau principal Sir David Ellis said Murphy’s broad industry knowledge, horsemanship and understanding of the stable made him an ideal appointment. He noted the promotion reflected Te Akau’s commitment to developing talented young professionals.
“I’m really excited to step into the Racing Manager role and continue building my career with Te Akau. Racing and bloodstock are huge passions of mine, so I’m looking forward to working closely with our owners and the wider team and getting stuck into the season ahead,” Murphy said.
