Greg Nichols’ departure leaves three seats to fill on Racing Victoria board

A third vacancy is set to appear on the Racing Victoria board with confirmation that long-time director Greg Nichols will leave by the end of this month.

Nichols’ term on the RV Board was slated to conclude this year as he had served 12 years, which is the maximum term.

However, his rapid departure opens up a third vacancy for Racing Minister Anthony Carbines to fill.

Previous chairman Brian Kruger left in July last year, and his role has yet to be filled, with interim chairman Mike Hirst confirmed he would leave the board on May 31.

Nichols’ decision comes only a week since the Racing Victoria board survived a Special General Meeting on which the future of five directors was voted upon.

While that motion to spill more than half the board was defeated, there will be a substantially new-look board in the coming months with lobbying from various stakeholders for the three vacant positions.

Minister Carbines must appoint all new board members and undertake a process involving a selection committee advising him.

It is expected among those who will go before the panel for the position left vacant by Nichols will be former AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan, who is tipped to not only join the Board but be elected as the next chairman.

Nichols has served during a period of extraordinary transformation for the Victorian racing industry.

“It’s been a pleasure to serve on the Racing Victoria board for the past 12 years, working alongside a raft of highly accomplished and committed directors,” Nichols said.

“Victorian racing has come a long way in that time, delivering record returns to participants and unparalleled investment in integrity, welfare and infrastructure.
