Injury has forced veteran NSW jockey Darryl “Digger” McLellan into retirement.
Crowned Sydney’s champion apprentice in the 1992/93 season, McLellan has bowed out because of an ongoing shoulder complaint as a result of a fall more than a decade ago.
The 54-year-old rode the last of his 1718 winners at Coffs Harbour on June 29.
In a 36-year career. McLellan twice tasted success at Group 1 level.
He won the 1995 Galaxy on Magic Of Money and the 2002 Sydney Cup on Henderson Bay.
McLellan also rode Lonhro to win the 2001 Warwick Stakes and partnered Saintly in an early-season three-year-old win at Newcastle.
