NZ prepares for release of Project Stamina

New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) and Harness Racing New Zealand (HRNZ) are poised to jointly release the Project Stamina report on Tuesday, with the report expected to shape the future footprint of racing infrastructure across the country.

The future of Trentham Racecourse, in the nation’s capital, Wellington, is set to be revealed, with expectations it may be among the venues earmarked for closure under a broader rationalisation of racecourses.

There is also considerable conjecture about the future of Alexandra Park, the premier harness racing venue in Auckland, and a host of other tracks.

While any recommendations made will still require approval from the boards of both racing codes, there is expected to be considerable reaction from affected clubs, participants and supporters.

The report’s release comes during a pivotal week for New Zealand racing, with the scheduled closure of greyhound racing on Friday.
Funding arrangements between the two racing codes and TAB NZ are also expected to be announced.
