For those who believe breeding a Group 1 winner is the domain of millionaires and royalty, Saturday’s trio of Group 1 races at Caulfield were a salient lesson that elite horses can emerge from anywhere.

The combined service fees for the sires which produced Blue Diamond Stakes winner Hayasugi, Futurity Stakes victor Mr Brightside and Oakleigh Plate hero Queman was less than $20,000.

Hayasugi’s win was a breakthrough Group 1 for first-year sire Royal Meeting, who stood at $11,000 in that debut season, while Bullbars, who in 2016 was $NZ6000 a service at Highview Stud, continues to hit the headlines thanks to Mr Brightside, who racked up a sixth elite success on Saturday.

Queman’s sire is Mint Lane and when the now Group 1 winner was conceived in 2017, the American-bred stallion stood for just $2200 at Willow Grove Stud in South Australia.
