Imported stayer Soul Of Spain made it four wins from six Australian starts and claimed his first stakes success with victory in Friday’s Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup.
Racing in the Go Racing colours for trainer Chris Waller, Soul Of Spain and Zac Lloyd surged through along the rail to win the $300,000 feature, defeating Royal Supremacy and Travolta in a slogging finish to the Group 3 race.
The progressive Irish-bred stayer has now win five of 14 starts and has improved greatly since arriving in Australia earlier this year. He now looks destined to be a considerable threat in The Metropolitan, a race his trainer has won on six previous occasions.
