Straight Up – Stallion strategy paying off, plus Straight Shorts launches

In this edition:

First things first, a couple of key announcements about some editorial product enhancements by The Straight as we build into 2025.

After taking considerable feedback over recent months, including from our readers’ survey late last year, we have been thinking of how we better serve our audience.

Today we have launched Straight Shorts. It’s a rolling news update service on the biggest stories in racing, wagering and breeding.

Created at the start of each day, it looks and functions like any other article, but it will be updated throughout the day as news evolves. It will allow you, as the reader, to get across more stories of importance on the day.

Straight Shorts will be launched as its own daily newsletter in the coming weeks. If you wish to sign up – go here – and select it. You may have to sign in again to your The Straight account to access this.

While Straight Shorts allows us to have a greater breadth of topics, it also allows us to devote our focus on the major stories we want to cover in detail – the features, analysis and major issues which we have become renowned for.

Do you like this idea and want to be the major sponsor of Straight Shorts? Get in touch with our partnerships executive Gavin Corcoran (partnerships@thestraight.com.au), to discuss this or our other advertising and sponsorship offerings.

We will continue to feature our premium content on this newsletter, Straight Up.

One last bit of admin. You may have noticed that we have had some ‘issues’ with our X account in recent days. We have set up a new account @TheStraightonX, which, fingers crossed, can keep you up to date with all the latest from The Straight on that platform.

Right, let’s get into the stories!

We’ve reported already this year that the colts yearling market has cooled significantly, as several of the colts syndicates have opted to take a back seat.

One of those has been Rosemont Stud’s alliance, but a couple of strong recent results has the Victorian-based outfit suddenly up and about. Both Schwarz and Bosustow are destined for Group 1 targets having already put themselves into contention for breeding careers with major wins early in 2025.

In this week’s Rowe On Monday, Tim Rowe spoke to Anthony Mithen about the uptick in fortunes and whether it might re-energise their approach to buying for the rest of the 2025 yearling season.

We have just passed the halfway mark of the racing season and already six stallions have surpassed 100 Australian winners, including three which are going at record pace this season.

By our reckoning, there have never been so many stallions to have brought up the ton by this point of the season. What does that tell us? Run the Numbers explores.
