Sweet addition adds to Meteor’s Widden legacy

Sweet Ride will become the fourth descendant of the influential but ill-fated stallion Northern Meteor to stand at Widden Stud in 2024.

The son of Deep Field, a winner of the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes as well as three other races in his 20-start racing career, will kick of his stallion career at $11,000 (inc GST) at Widden’s NSW base.

Bred and raced by the Vieira family, like his new barnmate Trapeze Artist, Sweet Ride comes from the same family as Group 1 winners Metal Bender and Amarelinha, as well as Newgate stallion North Pacific.

As well as his win for trainer Annabel Neasham in the 2022 San Domenico, a race which boasts a host of stallions on its honour role, including another new barnmate in Anders as well as In The Congo, Exceedance, Star Turn and his own broodmare sire Foxwedge, Sweet Ride was twice placed at Group 2 level and Group 3 level.

“I am excited to have another stallion standing at Widden, Sweet Ride was an exceptionally fast horse and performed at stakes level his entire career. I have earmarked 30 mares for him already, which include two sisters to Champion Sprinter Trapeze Artist, so he will be given every chance,” Bert Vieira said.

He joins Portland Sky, Zousain and Zoustar as sire descendants of Northern Meteor at Widden. Northern Meteor’s spectacular but short stallion career at Widden featured 24 stakes winners across four seasons, including six Group 1 winners.

“It’s now evident that Northern Meteor is a ‘breed shaper’, and it’s a sire line that we have had tremendous success with, to add another speed stallion from this line with the support from Bert and Gai gives him the best possible chance to become another success story for Northern Meteor and Widden,” said Widden’s Matthew Comerford.
