Tendon injury ends career of Gollan’s Group 1 winner Antino
Dual Group 1 winner and Queensland Horse of the Year Antino has been retired from racing after an injury suffered at Eagle Farm on Saturday.
It became apparent on Sunday morning, following Antino’s run in the Brisbane Handicap, that the seven-year-old gelding had suffered an injury when he was found to have heat and swelling in his right fore tendon.
Further veterinary examinations this morning confirmed Antino sustained an injury to that tendon during the race, leading Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan said in a statement.
After consultation with his ownership group, led by Hong Kong’s Jeetu Ramchandani, the decision was made to retire Antino from racing.
A New Zealand-bred gelding by Redwood, who started his career with Gold Coast trainer Adam Campton, Antino retires as a winner of 13 races from 33 starts including the Group 1 Toorak Handicap and Group 1 Doomben Cup. He was also crowned Queensland Horse of the Year in 2024 and 2025.
Ramchandani purchased Antino during the height of Covid for NZ$27,000 at the 2020 New Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run Sale. He won $3.46 million during his five seasons of racing.
“It is with tremendous sadness we have had to make this decision given the thrills and excitement he has provided the racing industry from fans to our staff and owners,” Gollan said.
