Darley’s Too Darn Hot continues to close in on becoming just the second second-season sire in Australia history to bank over $10 million in progeny earnings, with an 82nd racetrack success of the season.

Signor Tortoni, a homebred for the Tait and Nivison families trained by Ron Quinton, registered his second win, proving too strong in a 1200 metre benchmark race at Canterbury with Jason Collett in the saddle.

The three-year-old half-brother to stakes winners Wings Of Song and Cherry Tortoni started a $1.65 favourite and make it back-to-back wins, having recently won at Gosford.

Significantly, it powered Too Darn Hot to over $9.7 million in Australian progeny earnings this season. He is already assured of securing the title as champion second-season sire to go with the champion first-season sire title he secured last season.

No sire in history has won as much as his progeny has - $13.9 million in their first two seasons with runners in Australia.

Should his Australian progeny win another $300,000 this season, Too Darn Hot would surpass $10 million, becoming just the second stallion to achieve that mark with two crops at the track.

The other one was Rubick, whose progeny, led by The Everest winner Yes Yes Yes, earned $10.7 million in 2019/20.

Too Darn Hot has 10 Australian stakes winners this season, the most of any second-season sire in Australia since Redoute’s Choice, who had 15 stakes winners in 2004/05.

He returns to Darley Australia this year to stand at $275,000 (inc GST).
