In a training partnership with his father Toby in Brisbane, Trent Edmonds tasted success at the highest level winning a Stradbroke Handicap with Tyzone.
In those days, the Edmonds father-and-son training outfit had nearly 200 horses on the books and 90 in work at any one time.
But Trent Edmonds harboured ambitions of training in Melbourne and earlier this year took the leap and moved south to set up at Pakenham.
Edmonds only has four horses in work at present and a couple of pre-trainers and is pretty much a one-man band as he goes about trying to establish himself in Melbourne.
At Sandown on Wednesday, Edmonds will saddle just his second runner on the metropolitan circuit when Glens Top Cat runs in the Stow Storage Solutions Handicap (2400m).
Glens Top Cat will be aiming to complete a winning hat-trick after scoring at Bairnsdale and Moe in his past two starts.
"I'd like more horses in work, but that comes with results," said Edmonds who has had just nine starters since opening his new stable.
"I'm enjoying it, but I have to place the horses that I do have where they can win.
"I'd like to be a bit busier than I am, and hopefully that will come with time."
Edmonds picked-up Glens Top Cat for a modest $12,000 and in his four runs to date has picked up just shy of $33,000.
First prize on Wednesday in $27,500.
"Some family members, existing and new clients have gone in him at an entry level price, and they've had a ball so far," Edmonds said.
"He's paid for himself so far and hopefully he can continue paying for himself tomorrow."
Edmonds has called on the 3kg claim of Tatum Bull who has impressed the trainer with her victories at the past two Caulfield meetings on Edison and Cadmus.
"He has strung a couple together and, in the ratings, they rise pretty quick, but when they lose a couple, they stay the same rating or drop one point," Edmond said.
"I think in his last two wins he's risen eight points, so we've got Tatum to ride him and her 3kg claim will be important.
"Everything's been fantastic with him since his last win. He doesn't take much training now that he's very fit.
"He's done super."
