UK jockey-turned-trainer Darryll Holland in Mauritius move

Darryll Holland, the former UK jockey who rode Jardine’s Lookout into the minor placing in the first of Makybe Diva’s three Melbourne Cup wins, will continue his training career in Mauritius.

Holland will quit British racing to relocate his operation from Newmarket to the Indian Ocean island where he will join 11 other licensed trainers.

The move signals the end of his Newmarket chapter, where he operated from Harraton Court Stables after transitioning from an international riding career to training.

Holland first became familiar with Mauritian racing during his days in the saddle and now views the jurisdiction as an opportunity to contribute to the next phase of its development.

His relocation represents a significant shift from the depth and scale of British Flat racing to a smaller but passionate racing circuit that stages a condensed annual season of 27 meetings.

The first of those fixtures for 2026 will be staged on April 25.

During a decorated riding career, Holland rode in two Melbourne Cups with his third placing on the Alan Jarvis-trained Jardine’s Lookout in Makybe Diva’s 2003 triumph an obvious highlight.
