Victorian WorkCover initiative halves return-to-work times

Victorian trainers are reporting measurable improvements in WorkCover claims management and injury handling following the introduction of a targeted initiative led by Racing Victoria and the Australian Trainers’ Association.

In 2023, a 130 per cent spike in the WorkCover rate saw trainer premiums rise from around 4 per cent to as high as 18 per cent, significantly increasing operating costs across the industry.

In response, Racing Victoria and the ATA launched the WorkCover Support Service program to stabilise premiums, improve injury management, and give trainers greater control over an unpredictable system.

Funded through a contribution from prizemoney and overseen by the ATA, the program is delivered by head consultant Garry Cuddy, CES Workcover Solutions and insurance agency Gallagher Bassett.

Two years after its introduction, more than 120 Victorian trainers have joined WSS, reporting immediate financial savings across stables of all sizes.

Workplace outcomes have also improved, with the average return-to-work timeframe for injured staff falling from 78 days to 35 days.
