Wild Ruler and Barbaric off the mark

First-season sires Wild Ruler and Barbaric marked their first winners with the victories of Savage Look and Barbarian King at Scone and Rockhampton respectively on Thursday.

Wild Ruler’s gelding Savage Look, who is trained by Rod Northam, made his debut at his home track over 900 metres and was able to hold off Farnan filly Better By Far to win narrowly.

A $130,000 Magic Millions weanling purchase for Alma Vala Thoroughbreds, he was passed in as a yearling and retained by Alma Vale to race.

He is Wild Ruler’s eighth runner and the son of Snitzel’s first winner.

Lyndhurst Stud’s Barbaric also had his first winner when the Tom Smith-prepared Barbarian King lived up to his short price at his second start to win by a narrow margin over 1100 metres.

The two-year-old gelding is a home bred for the Milner family and is one of four starters for one-time Black Opal Stakes winner Barbaric.

There are now 13 first-season stallions who have had a winner with their first crops in Australia.
