Williamses engage high-profile barrister amid Racing WA charges

Grant and Alana Williams have enlisted prominent barrister Damian Sheales to fight serious integrity allegations.

The West Australian training duo had previously been represented by senior counsel Tom Percy at an earlier stewards’ hearing, but have opted to change legal direction as proceedings continue.

The Williamses remain suspended after their horse Starry Heights returned a positive test for a banned substance.

Starry Heights suffered a catastrophic injury in the Kalgoorlie Cup on October 4 and was subsequently euthanised.

A post-mortem revealed the prohibited substance Ritalinic Acid in the horse’s system.

Racing WA stewards charged the pair on Thursday, with the Williamses expected to enter a plea when the inquiry resumes.

Sheales has previously represented high-profile clients, including trainer Danny O’Brien in cobalt allegations, Jamie Melham over breaches during COVID-19 lockdowns, and assistant trainer Jarrod McLean in matters linked to Darren Weir’s stable.
