Winx’s breeding career has been closely followed, with the 25-time Group 1 winning champion having lost her first foal, and almost her own life, during foaling back in 2020.

Two years later she foaled a filly by Pierro, who broke all Australian records when she sold for $10 million at this year’s Inglis Easter Yearling Sale, purchased outright by one of Winx’s part owners, Debbie Kepitis.

She failed to get in foal later that year, but returned to four-time Australian champion sire Snitzel in late November 2023.

The colt is a result of that mating, with a first colt from the star mare set to create plenty of interest as to whether he too will be offered for sale as a yearling.

‘A rare thing’ – Andrew Rule on recapturing the remarkable story of Winx
Journalist Andrew Rule has always written brilliantly about the ordinary and the extraordinary. Writing about Winx, and having it turned into a feature film, is something else, he tells Matt Stewart.

Given her previous breeding challengers, that both mare and foal are both said to be healthy will be a relief for her owners. However, because of the late-season foaling, she is highly unlikely to be put back into foal this season.

Snitzel is the sire of 21 individual Group 1 winners, among them stallions such as Trapeze Artist, Shamus Award and Russian Revolution.

He has had 18 foals out of mares by Street Cry hit the track for 14 winners, including stakes winner and Kooringal Stud stallion Sandbar.
