NZTR rolls out new horse welfare framework
New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) has released a new welfare strategy, Together for the Thoroughbred, outlining an industry-wide framework for the care of Thoroughbreds from breeding through to retirement.
The strategy consolidates existing welfare practices across breeding, racing and post-racing into a more consistent and evidence-based system focused on horse welfare throughout all stages of life.
NZTR general manager of welfare and industry capability Sam Fursdon said the strategy built on welfare standards already established within the industry.
“This strategy brings that work together into a clear and consistent framework, and reinforces that welfare is a shared responsibility across the industry,” she said.
Professor Nat Waran said the strategy included measures aimed at supporting accountability and ongoing review processes.
“The establishment of the Thoroughbred Welfare and Ethics Advisory Group demonstrates a clear commitment to embedding welfare expertise, independent advice and ongoing oversight into decision making across the industry,” she said.
The strategy is based on the New Zealand-developed Five Domains Model and includes measures focused on traceability, safer racing and training practices, retraining and rehoming pathways, responsible breeding and ownership, and education across the industry.
