Angela Jones faces winter carnival blow after barrier trial fall

Brisbane jockey Angela Jones is set to miss the Queensland winter carnival after suffering a broken collarbone in a fall at the Doomben trials on Thursday morning.

Jones was riding Tony Gollan’s mare Deep Vegas in a 1000m trial when the horse stumbled, throwing the young jockey heavily to the turf.

The premiership-winning rider, who last season became the first female jockey to claim the Brisbane jockeys’ title, was taken to hospital with suspected concussion and a broken collarbone following the incident.

Scans later confirmed the collarbone fracture, with Jones released from the hospital ahead of specialist consultations on Friday as she prepares to undergo surgery.

Jones, third in this season’s Brisbane jockeys’ premiership behind Ben Thompson and Ryan Maloney, has been replaced on her seven scheduled rides at the Gold Coast’s Hollindale Stakes meeting.
