Applications open for Racing SA schools program

Applications have opened for the 2027 intake of Racing SA’s Certificate II in Racing Industry program, offering senior secondary students a pathway into the thoroughbred industry through a combination of classroom learning and practical experience.

Delivered as a vocational education and training course that attracts SACE credits, the nationally recognised qualification introduces students to racehorse care and the breadth of career opportunities available across the racing industry.

The 2026 cohort has visited race meetings, morning trackwork, the Morphettville Veterinary Hospital and the Adelaide Magic Millions Yearling Sale, while also taking part in horse-handling sessions and learning from trainers, stable staff, trackwork riders, farriers, track managers and other industry participants.

Racing SA industry training and education manager Claire Lindop said exposing students to the industry’s day-to-day operations was one of the program’s greatest strengths.

“Racing is much broader than many people realise,” Lindop said.

“The Certificate II gives students a chance to see the industry up close, meet the people working in it every day and understand where their own interests might fit.”

The 2026 students are now completing work placements in professional racing stables, with Lindop saying the experience provides valuable insight into the demands of the industry.

“It is one thing to enjoy horses, but another to understand the pace of the industry,” she said.
