Bowman keeps seat warm for McDonald on Romantic Warrior
Hugh Bowman has given Romantic Warrior a positive assessment as Danny Shum’s star continued preparations for the HK$30 million Group 1 QEII Cup on Champions Day at Sha Tin on April 26.
Chasing a record-extending fourth victory in the FWD QEII Cup after wins in 2022, 2023 and 2024, Romantic Warrior finished a comfortable second in an untested 1600m turf barrier trial at Sha Tin under Bowman on Tuesday.
“He was great. He went through his paces, and he was nice and relaxed. “He can have a tendency sometimes to be a bit fresh and overdo it, but he was really relaxed, so that’s very encouraging for the team going into the main event,” Bowman said.
A revered figure in Hong Kong racing in recent seasons, Romantic Warrior has amassed 13 Group 1 wins across Hong Kong, Australia, Japan and the United Arab Emirates.
The gelding also holds world-record earnings of HK$254.66 million and is set to face one of his toughest FWD QEII Cup line-ups, including international Group 1 winners Masquerade Ball, Royal Champion and Sosie.
James McDonald will partner Romantic Warrior in the QEII Cup, while Bowman rides My Wish in the HK$24 million Group 1 FWD Champions Mile (1600m).
