There was a time when Australian jockeys were synonymous with England's - and still perhaps the world's - most prestigious race, The Derby.
In a 19-year period between 1948 and 1967, Australian born riders took the Epsom Classic no fewer than eight times * (see below for list of winners) , a better than 40 per cent strike rate in a race which, in that period in history at least, every rider in Europe and many from further afield sought to win.
But as the prize money in this country has steadily increased the temptation for our best hoops to go to Europe has diminished, and there have been no Australian winning riders since George Moore scored for Sir Noel Murless on Royal Palace 57 years ago.
