Group 1-winning jockey Blake Spriggs has announced his retirement as he continues to recover from injuries sustained in a serious race fall.

Spriggs visited a neurosurgeon earlier this week and was informed that a return to race riding was not feasible due to the inherent risks involved.

The 33-year-old spent a month in Canberra Hospital after the fall at Moruya on January 17.

He was left with multiple broken ribs, a fractured collarbone, a lacerated liver and a brain bleed.

Spriggs bows out having ridden more than 650 winners.

Sir John Hawkwood provided Spriggs with his lone Group 1 victory when successful in the 2016 Metropolitan at Randwick.
