Group 1 winner Uncommon James retired
Trainer Matt Hoysted has announced the retirement of stable star Uncommon James, bringing the curtain down on the career of one of Queensland’s most successful sprinters of recent years.
The son of Cable Bay retires with more than $1.7 million in prize money, headlined by his victory in the 2023 Group 1 Oakleigh Plate at Caulfield.
Bred and raced by the Lavin family, Uncommon James exceeded expectations throughout a career that also saw him crowned Queensland Horse of the Year.
In a statement announcing his retirement, connections reflected on the gelding’s achievements and the impact he had on the stable.
“The journey that he has taken us on has far exceeded any expectation we could have imagined,” the statement said.
The Lavin family described the Oakleigh Plate triumph and Queensland Horse of the Year title as standout moments in a remarkable career.
Uncommon James bowed out in winning fashion, capturing the Group 2 Moreton Cup at his most recent start.
The first Group 1 winner for both the Lavin family and trainers Matt and Steve Hoystead, the popular sprinter will spend his retirement at Lavin Park, returning to the property where his journey began.
