Heart issue sees Campaldino withdrawn from Sydney Cup

Campaldino has been scratched from Saturday’s Sydney Cup at Randwick after blood tests confirmed elevated cardiac troponin levels.

Co‑trainer Adrian Bott notified Racing NSW stewards on Friday that results from a sample taken on April 7 showed the gelding had heightened cardiac markers following the arrhythmia detected during a routine veterinary inspection earlier in the week.

Acting on veterinary advice, connections have withdrawn the Chairman’s Handicap runner‑up from the $2 million Group 1 race and will send the horse for an immediate spell.

Campaldino had been on the third line of betting as an $8 chance prior to being ruled out.

Manion Cup winner Mr Monaco, a progressive European-bred five-year-old trained by Ciaron Maher, is the $5 favourite for the Sydney Cup.

Meanwhile, Godolphin and trainer Chris Waller have scratched Golden Rose-winning colt Beiwacht from the Group 2 Arrowfield 3YO Sprint, an undercard feature at Randwick on Saturday. He is expected to run in next week’s Group 1 All Aged Stakes after winning a barrier trial at Canterbury on Friday.
