Scott confirmed on Friday he had informed Racing Queensland this week that he will be departing later this year once a replacement has been found and he can conduct a suitable handover.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time leading the Queensland racing industry,” Scott said in a statement.

“It’s been incredibly challenging, and equally rewarding, to work in an industry that is my passion, but there are other challenges that I would like to pursue.”

Scott’s up-front approach to his role has been seen as a breath of fresh air by some in the industry. He has made himself freely available to media and has been prepared to make ongoing commentary about industry issues.

However, his direct style has also brought him into conflict with other stakeholders.

Having achieved record revenue levels last year, Scott said he is content with what he has achieved and set in place for RQ.

“While I am not leaving immediately, ensuring the board can conduct a thorough process to appoint my successor, there are many things to look forward to including three highly anticipated winter carnivals, new stables in Townsville and lights in Redcliffe and the grand opening of the world’s best greyhound venue at The Q,” he said.

Scott came into the role with a wealth of wagering experience, having worked as chief executive of Ladbrokes Australia and vice president trading, VIP and retail operations for BetMGM.

RQ Chair Steve Wilson paid tribute to Scott’s service.

“Jason has done a stellar job in his successful tenure as CEO,” Wilson said.

“The economic headwinds have been challenging since he assumed the role, but he has taken that in his stride, growing our revenue, market share and stature as a racing jurisdiction.

“He has also served with distinction on the Racing Australia Board and as its representative on the Asian Racing Federation Executive Council.

“The board and I are thankful for the sterling job that Jason has done and we look forward to him continuing to do so during his transition.”

RQ will commence advertising for a new chief executive with expectation that Scott will remain in the role until at least the middle of the year.
