Jockey Kristy Bennett in induced coma after fall

Queensland’s racing industry has rallied behind jockey Kristy Bennett after she sustained serious injuries in an incident at the Gold Coast trials on Tuesday.

Bennett suffered a fall involving a horse following a trial and is understood to have sustained a brain bleed.

She was treated on course by medical staff before being transported to hospital by ambulance, where she was later placed in an induced coma.

The Australian Jockeys’ Association (AJA) confirmed the seriousness of the incident in a social media update, expressing support for the injured rider.

Bennett had recently relocated from Western Australia to Queensland in a bid to further her riding career. She had been riding trackwork for leading trainer Tony Gollan as well as several other stables.

Her first race rides in the state came at Emerald in May, with a subsequent appearance at Gladstone as she worked to establish herself in Queensland’s racing ranks.
