Maher apprentice delivers in Coongy before biggest career ride

Leading apprentice Jabez Johnstone delivered a perfect dress rehearsal for the most important moment of his career, winning a Group 3 at Caulfield on Wednesday.

Riding for his master Ciaron Maher, Johnstone executed a front-running ride with precision to claim the Coongy Handicap on import Ziryab.

Ziryab held on bravely to beat the favourite Darkbonee and Sunset Park, making it two wins from three starts this campaign.

Johnstone, who joined the Maher operation towards the end of last season after working his way through the Tasmanian riding ranks, has been booked to ride Kings Valley in the $6.5 million Caulfield Cup on Saturday.

Kings Valley is a $31 outsider but Maher rates the six-year-old a genuine lightweight chance.

“I can’t say enough to be only over here (in Melbourne) for five months and secure two Group 3 (wins) and a Group 1 ride,” Johnstone told Racing.com.

“It’s just such a surreal moment, and just forever grateful.”
