Colic surgery sidelines dual Group 1 winner Observer from stud duties

Dual Group 1 winner Observer has undergone surgery for colic and will be rested from stallion duties while he recovers.

Darley confirmed on Friday that the issue was detected early and successfully treated through surgery.

“Following an early diagnosis, Observer underwent surgery for colic overnight, and the issue has been addressed,” Darley said.

“He will now have a period of rest and recovery, with further updates provided in time.”

No timeframe has been provided for Observer’s return to stud duties with further information expected in the coming days.

The son of Ghaiyyath commenced his first breeding season on September 1 at Darley’s Northwood Park property, where he stood at a fee of $33,000 (inc GST).

Observer won five of his 11 starts, including the Victoria Derby and Australian Guineas for trainer Ciaron Maher, and earned almost $1.7 million in prizemoney.

He emerged as one of the leading colts of his generation during the 2025 spring carnival. After finishing third in the Caulfield Guineas, he claimed the Group 2 Moonee Valley Vase before producing a dominant performance to win the Victoria Derby at Flemington on November 1.

Observer returned in the autumn to win the Group 2 Autumn Stakes at Caulfield before capturing the $1 million Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington.

That victory made him just the fourth horse in the 40-year history of the Australian Guineas to complete the Victoria Derby-Australian Guineas double, and the first since Hitotsu in 2022.
