Queen Elizabeth Cup stops in at Rosehill

The Listed $200,000 Queen Elizabeth II Cup will headline Saturday’s 10‑race card at Rosehill Gardens, paying tribute to the late monarch’s deep connection to thoroughbred racing.

Run under its registered title of the Winter Cup, the staying feature is contested over 2400 metres and forms part of a rotating series staged at interstate venues under black-type conditions each year.

Australian Turf Club chief executive Steve McMahon said the race was a fitting way to honour Queen Elizabeth II, whose passion for racing spanned decades and extended to Australia.

“Queen Elizabeth II was a massive racing fan and supporter of our sport and her history is also intertwined with the Australian Turf Club,” McMahon said.

“Her Majesty attended the races in Sydney on several visits to Australia and owned and raced her own horses on our tracks.

“We are delighted to be able to recognise her lasting links and popularity with racing and the wider community.”
