Racing meets Rugby as Hong Kong Sevens celebrates 50 years
Hong Kong’s sporting calendar is set for a major boost in April as horse racing and rugby join forces for Racing with Rugby Week.
The initiative brings together Hong Kong China Rugby, the Hong Kong Jockey Club and Hong Kong Football Club for the first time to mark the 50th anniversary of the Hong Kong Sevens.
The week’s highlights include an expanded Hong Kong 10s tournament, a midweek race at Happy Valley, and both the Hong Kong men’s and women’s teams playing at Sha Tin on Sunday, April 12.
The 10s tournament also marks its 40th anniversary this year and has been extended from two days to three, while the Wednesday horse racing meeting will carry a Hong Kong Sevens theme.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club will continue as the official community partner of the Hong Kong Sevens, reinforcing its role in citywide sports initiatives.
“The rugby sevens and horse racing are two of Hong Kong’s most iconic sporting attractions, each drawing thousands of visitors to the city every year. It’s fantastic that we have been able to bring these traditions together through the Racing with Rugby Week,” said HKJC chief executive Winfried Engelbrecht-Bresges told the South China Morning Post.
“The Jockey Club has long been a committed supporter of the city’s sports development and the rugby sevens community outreach program. This partnership not only strengthens that commitment to community support but also reinforces Hong Kong’s status as a world-class sports tourism destination, creating a truly unique experience for local fans and visitors alike.”
