Richmond chosen to replace Wentworth Park as home of NSW greyhound racing

Greyhound Racing NSW will build a multi-purpose metropolitan precinct at the Richmond Club, days before Wentworth Park stages its last meeting. Construction is targeted for late 2027.

Greyhound Racing NSW (GRNSW) has selected the Richmond Club site for its new Sydney Metropolitan Racing Precinct (SMRP), the replacement for Wentworth Park, which hosts its final meeting on Friday.

GRNSW said it assessed 12 sites across Western Sydney with Deloitte Australia, weighing participant access, planning requirements and cost. The precinct will occupy the current Richmond site or a larger version of it, with the choice expected in early 2027 and construction targeted to start late that year.

The proposals under consideration include three new tracks, club facilities developed through a joint venture, 24-hour attended boarding kennels and training facilities, a veterinary practice and a possible joint-venture motel. GRNSW is also considering relocating its administration to the site.

GRNSW chief executive Steve Griffin pointed to the tenure issue that ended Wentworth Park.

“Unlike Wenty we own the site so can never be removed from it, which is a great position for the sport to be in,” he said.

Until the precinct is built, Saturday metropolitan racing moves to Gosford from October 17, then to Richmond from September 2027.
