Run The Numbers – Streets ahead in the damsire stakes
Idle Flyer’s victory in the Queen of the Turf Stakes provided her late damsire Street Cry with his fifth Australian Group 1 winner in that role this season, well clear of any other stallion as the remarkable record of the produce of his daughters continues to build.

Street Cry has often featured as a subject in this column, and rightly so, given the influence he has been able to build first as a sire, then as a sire of sires and a broodmare sire.
He shuttled to Australia on nine occasions and from those trips produced 53 stakes winners from just 610 runners, among them nine Group 1 winners, including the mighty Winx, who carried him to the title of Australian champion sire in 2015/16. He is the only overseas-bred winner of that honour since Danehill, whose last and ninth title came in 2004/05.
But while Street Cry died relatively young, at age 16, his legacy has been extraordinarily strong. This Australian racing season, his sire sons have produced six individual Group 1 winners, four by Street Boss and one each by Pride Of Dubai and Per Incanto.
That ranks him only behind the Redoute’s Choice, whose sire sons have produced nine individual Group 1 winners this Australian season, when it comes to grandsire influence.
But on the other side of the pedigree, as a damsire, Street Cry is unmatched in terms of elite winners in Australia this season.
Queen of the Turf winner Idle Flyer is out of the Street Cry mare Progressive, and she was the fifth Group 1 winner of 2025/26 to feature the late Darley stallion in that role. The others are Treasurethe Moment, Tom Kitten, Attica and Beiwacht.
The next best performed damsire is Exceed And Excel on three, while Redoute’s Choice, Lonhro and Medaglia D’Oro have two apiece.
When it comes to Australian stakes winners as a broodmare sire this season, Street Cry has the equal most, 11, along with Fastnet Rock and Exceed And Excel, while Redoute’s Choice has 10.
On Saturday, Fernhill Mile winner Diameter and Port Adelaide Guineas victor McWoody joined the list of stakes winners out of Street Cry mares.
Those results have been achieved despite Street Cry having considerably fewer daughters with active runners than the trio of sires listed above.
Street Cry’s total of 283 Australian runners as a broodmare sire so far this season is less than half of Fastnet Rock’s 602 and Redoute’s Choice’s 581. It is also considerably less than Exceed And Excel’s 468.
Of the 12 broodmare sires with six or more Australian stakes winners this season, only three have had fewer runners than Street Cry, Written Tycoon (189), Medaglia D’Oro (190) and Shamardal (143).
Of that group, only Shamardal, who is out of Street Cry’s full sister, has a higher percentage of stakes winners-to-runners, at 4.9 per cent, compared to 3.9 per cent for Street Cry.

But this season is not just a flash in the pan for the progeny of Street Cry’s daughters. Since the start of the 2023/24 season, there have been 10 individual Australian Group 1 winners out of Street Cry mares.
That, again, is more than any other damsire. Fastnet Rock has seven in that time, while the next best is Encosta De Lago on five.
Redoute’s Choice has three Group 1 winners as a damsire since the start of the 2023/24 season, the same as Exceed And Excel, Shamardal, Medaglia D’Oro, Lonhro, Snitzel, Galileo, O’Reilly, Dubawi and Commands.
While his inferior number of daughters has meant that Street Cry has never finished higher than third on the Australian Broodmare Sires Table, when it comes to his rate of Group 1 winners per runners in Australia, he is arguably the most effective damsire of the 21st century.
Overall, he has had 16 Australian Group 1 winners from his daughters from 827 runners. Run The Numbers looked at the stats of 16 other leading broodmare sires of this century and found not one of them came close to Street Cry’s G1w/R ratio of 1.93 per cent in Australia.
The closest was Galileo on 1.56 per cent, while Zabeel’s daughters’ strike rate is 1.36 per cent. Centaine 1.22 per cent, Shamardal 1.15 per cent, O’Reilly 1.08 per cent and Danehill 1.04 per cent.
Redoute’s Choice has 25 Group 1 winners from his daughters, from 2603 runners, giving him a G1w/r rate of 0.96 per cent.
