Straight Up – Fire and poisoned turf, an unexpected start to 2025

In this edition:

The 2025 racing issues bingo card is throwing up a couple of interesting and unexpected headlines inside the first week of the New Year.

Four days out from the $14.5 million Magic Millions raceday, we still don’t know where the meeting will be run. Damage to the turf section around the 500 metres at the Gold Coast track already forced the pre-Millions feature meeting to the Sunshine Coast last Saturday and now the main meeting hangs in the balance.

Experts have been flown in from around Australia to try to resurrect/re-lay the damaged area, with a call on whether the feature meeting is airlifted to Eagle Farm expected midweek.

Initially blamed on vandalism, it is now suspected that the turf was sprayed in error. If that is the case, it asks a few questions of how something like that could happen so soon before Queensland’s biggest raceday. Given the events of recent years, it feels like the Gold Coast track may be cursed.

We spoke to Magic Millions Managing Director Barry Bowditch ahead of the sale and he is confident in the depth of the catalogue but believes it will be a buyers’ market.
