Thoroughbred racing slated for 2026 return in Kansas
Almost two decades after thoroughbred racing ceased in Kansas, the sport is set to return to the US state in October 2026.
The revival follows the passage of legislation signed by Governor Laura Kelly that allows 1000 Historical Horse Racing machines statewide.
Three per cent of machine gross revenue will be allocated to racing.
The state’s racehorse development fund is projected to receive roughly $US15 million for purses.
The breeding fund is expected to collect an additional $US3 million.
Racing will be staged at Eureka Downs, which last hosted thoroughbreds in 2008, the same year the Woodlands Racetrack in Kansas City closed.
Kansas will initially stage 44 race days each year.
